Who we are

Enhancing The Culture of Jewish Music In The GTA

Come to any of our practices and listen.  You will see and hear an eclectic group of passionate singers at work (and at play). The average age is probably around mid-forties, (or so we like to think! )a potentially unruly crowd. But, make no mistake, when the music starts, the harmonies fall into place and a sweeter sound is seldom to be found.  This is the Toronto Jewish Male Choir.

Every member of the TJMC is a volunteer, dedicated to their love of Jewish music; talented, enthusiastic and united in their desire to please their audiences with beautiful and inspiring melodies.

The TJMC is made up of choristers from a number of GTA synagogues.  The largest group comes from Chabad Lubavitch of Markham and almost exclusively comprises ex-South Africans who are graduates of major South African synagogue choirs.

Our choir started in the late 1980s, in response to a growing desire by ex-South Africans to have the majesty and power of a male choir for participation in weddings. Since then, the TJMC has evolved into its present status, captivating audiences with its unique sound and passion.

Always seeking new material and to enhance its professionalism, the TJMC  hired renowned professional coach, Klara Bagley.  Together with our choir master and musical director, Gary Rewald, this duo has made dramatic and positive changes in the choir’s voice training, increased repertoire and musical skill.  Their knowledge, experience and skill have been invaluable resources in bringing the choir to the attention of the larger GTA Jewish community.

The TJMC is a  highlight at any Jewish wedding ceremony and its performance always garners acclaim as wedding guests absorb the familiar melodies from a time gone by. Now, as the choir’s reputation grows, the TJMC tradition is spreading across the GTA, with more young people and Canadians hiring the choir for their wedding ceremonies. In fact, a few years ago, the TJMC performed at a wedding at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago, enthralling guests from around the world.

In addition to wedding performances, the choir has performed successfully at many concerts in Toronto.  The TJMC has sung with some of the world’s leading Chazzanim, participated in a massed Jewish choral performance, sung together with the Sydenham-Highlands North choir and appeared on stage together with Avram Fried. The TJMC also gives back to the community at large with tikkun olam (Repair the World) performances each year for the Southern African Jewish Association of Canada (SAJAC) seniors, as well as performances at Baycrest and at the Bloorview-MacMillan Centre. And in December 2011, the TJMC was privileged to perform at the inaugural Louis Lewandowski Festival in Berlin, Germany together with 300 choristers from 8 choirs from around the globe.

TJMC has stamped a unique and beautiful cultural element of traditional South African Jewish music, both religious and secular, on Jewish society in the GTA.  For more information, please contact Richard Steyn at 1-800-661-7999 ext 231 or torontojewishmalechoir@gmail.com
